Chapter Five

Awareness returned by degrees, drawing Anna back to reality one sense at a time. A hushed voice penetrated the buzzing in her ears, then she smelled coffee’s distinct aroma. Her stomach growled and her mouth tasted faintly bitter. She knew she’d been sleeping, but still felt exhausted, her muscles weak and heavy. Blinking repeatedly, she brought her surroundings into focus.

She was no longer in the austere guest quarters at the tiny military base. Sleek modern furniture and soft ivory walls trimmed in charcoal gray, this was the guest room in Endar’s penthouse. How long had she been sleeping? And much more important, had the breeding link worked? Was Ranzek still alive?

She tried to swing her legs over the side of the bed, but barely had the strength to lift her head. Focusing on the voice, she realized it was a one-sided conversation, like someone talking on a telephone. She couldn’t go to them, so there wasn’t really a choice but to interrupt.

“Hello,” she called out, hoping she was hearing Telek or Endar, not Mylo or one of the guards.

Emotions surged into her mind—relief, affection, and joy. She heard footfalls, like someone taking stairs two at a time, then Tekel rushed into the room. “Thank the benevolent maker! We were starting to worry that we had saved one member of our family only to lose another.”

His concern was even sweeter now that she could feel the depths of his emotions. The intensity that had blazed through her when the link was formed was muted now, offering her a continual sense of her males without overwhelming her. She could feel Tekel and Endar clearly, but her access to Ranzek seemed blocked. “Why can’t I sense Ranzek?”

“He is in a medically induced coma.” Tekel sat on the side of her bed and pressed her hand between his. His whiskey-colored gaze locked with hers and his mind gradually calmed. “The trauma team insisted that it was necessary for his survival. They also complimented us on our creativity. They all agreed that there is no way Ranzek would have survived without the breeding link.”

“Catch me up,” she urged. “How long was I out? Where is Endar?” It was comforting to wake up and have someone there. She’d spent the majority of her adult life alone. This was a surprisingly welcome change.

“We’ve been taking turns. One stays at the trauma center with Ranzek. The other stays here with you.” As he spoke, he slipped his arm beneath her and helped her sit then quickly placed pillows behind her back. “You’ve been unconscious for three days, but Dr. Kilfurd assured us that your vital signs were strong so all you needed was rest. We brought you home while Ranzek was moved to the trauma center.”

“Who is Dr. Kilfurd, and is the trauma center in Seattle?”

“City Three-One-Nine,” he corrected automatically. “Dr. Kilfurd is Endar’s private physician, and yes, the trauma center is here. Ranzek needs to grow stronger before they attempt tissue regeneration. The suppressant was so toxic that it affected every system in his body.
